Hello guys,

I currently own an SE Custom 24 and I've been thinking in improving my rig. Im from Mexico and here in my city there are not too many choices (speaking of PRS core guitars).
In my local store there is this beautiful SC250 which its serial number starts with 8 (dont know if its '88 or '98). It has an adjustable stop tail and the neck feels a little chuby compared to my se custom, but thats not a big issue. I also have the chance to order one S2 line guitar.
So now Im not sure whats better, that SC250 ($38,000 pesos mexicanos) or order a new S2 Singlecut ($20,000 pesos mexicanos), as it has very similar specs, What will you recommed to me? (price difference is around $1500 dollars)

Thanks in advance.

Hey man,

Welcome! The SC250 must be a 2008 model. They didn't have those in '88 or '98. I think the very first Singlecut wasn't until 2001 or thereabouts. Anyway, the question is do you have the money? If going for the SC250 doesn't make you broke and unable to pay bills, then do it. It has an american adjustable bridge, VS the korean stoptail. It should have more contour and carving to the overall body shape. It should be the better guitar. Of course the S2's are fantastic guitars as well, but if you can go core, why not?

The SC250 will be a more modern sound (think metal). that is why the bridge is intonatabile because of the probably heavier strings. The S2 will also have splitable pups for the single coil tones.

Si fuera yo compraría la S2.

Thanks Chris, actually thats what I though, but according to the support center page, the 2008 guitars start with "08", and the guitar I saw had only "8".
Money regards, I can save 3 or 4 months more to afford the core but I dont know if the difference to the S2 is that big. As far as I know, the S2 Singlecut uses the american stop tail bridge, the big difference would only be the pickups, but im not sure.

I would definitely go for the SC250, no doubt about that! If it's in good shape, anyway. Pickups can be swapped. Maybe that comes after some further money saving, but still. Also, you wouldn't take the same hit on resale value. I think resale values of S2s are going to be bad, but that's just my guess.

Thanks AP515, yes, im probably going for the S2 but im still considering the core as it looks more pretty lol. Its just that I dont know how big is the difference between each other (sound and feel), and I cannot test both :S

Thats a very interesting point Michael_DK ...I haven't consider that, maybe you are right.

Get the one where you don't think "maybe I SHOULD have bought the other one...?" after a month or two :-)

Go for the SC 250 if you can spend few more months saving some more money for it. I owned a 20th Anniversary Singlecut and I can tell you that the core line really worth every penny. The craftsmanship, design, components, tone, etc. all ingredients are considerably the best and thus you can't go wrong with it.

One more benefit of buying the core line PRS is the reselling price; the reselling price doesn't dramatically drop. If you bought the core model but finally don't satisfy with it, you can still sell it at a good price (around 75% of the price new).

Speaking of the S2 line, believe me or not, it's value is going bad both as new and used. In Thailand, many sellers are trying hard to sell brand new S2s offering some great deals such as "buy one S2, get one PRS SE30 amp for free". Many people here agree that the S2 models look way 'too much' like the Korean-made SE line. Some even say that at a glance, he mistaken an S2 Custom 24 for an SE version.:D Plus, the price difference between a brand new S2 Custom 24 and a used core variant is just only around $630, so who's gonna buy an S2?

In conclusion, speaking of both esthetic and financial terms, I strongly recommend you push the limit a bit more and grab the first prize getting the SC 250.

Good luck with your new gear!

Thank you all guys, I've decided to save a few months more and go for the core, the guitar is really georgeous.
I'll upload some photos when that finally happens :)

Thanks again and cheers.

I'd personally go for the SC250 as well, however I do own a S2 custom and the feel difference isn't as big as some ppl make it out to be IMHO...the USA line does have a better feel, however, the USA fret wire alone makes the S2 feel like a big step up from the SE line (and I own versions of each, with an artist package on the way).

I would save for the SC250. I really wish I had mine back! Does the one you re looking at have the satin finish? They only did that for a brief period. I'd pay more for that, though some wouldn't. The price seems a little high. Maybe you can talk him down a bit.

My 2 cents worth:
I have an S2 (CU24) and they are way better than the Korean version ( used to have one) and definitely worth their relatively small price That they look as the Korean version doesn't bother me at all, its the sound and feel I am interested in. I myself I think the S2 looks good, simple and functional and well proportioned and finished, As for the resell price, i live in Brasil and its very good, even for SEs.
BUT... as most here, i would go for the core line, IF you can afford them. Just played a CE24 core line and they ARE way better even if the S2 is very good....
It seems the price difference in PRSs case is really relative to the quality difference.
Trying to lay my hands on the perfect CE24 myself , and I think i just spotted THE one ;)
