Alright “Pickup Gremlins,” help me please, it’s my first time…

Being new to PRS, I started with two SE models, one being the Hollowbody II Piezo. This guitar sounds pretty slick to me, even with the imported pickups. However, in lurking through the shadows of the forum, its sounds like y’all might have the information I seek.

In my SE Custom, I *think* it has the 85/15 pickups, per Sweetwater’s website (this model was exclusive to them a few years back so I can’t find additional info to cross reference anywhere), which I thought was odd given that most, if not all, SE Customs comes with the 85/15 “S” pickups. If you guys can help me identify which I have, that would be great! I do have plans to swap those out to the Tremonti Signature pickups at some point though, regardless.

Now on to my point… The HBII Piezo was my intro to PRS. I love it, but I’ve read enough discussions about better pickups that I’m reaching out into this abyss to see what your recommendations might be to achieve the sound I’m looking for.

I absolutely love to play heavy rock with metal influence (think Tremonti/Alter Bridge type of stuff). My solid body does the uber hard stuff and I use it with a drop tune pedal often. The HBII with its 58/15Ss I like to use for the softer(ish) stuff, but still like crunchy bite and full sounds when I punch the overdrive. Both I keep tuned in D-standard or drop C, every so often tuning the SE Custom to open C5. For reference, I have a Blackstar HT Club 40 Venue amp that I play through on its clean settings and let the pedals do the dirty work.

Some of you know the sound profile I may be trying to hit and maybe I can clear up what I m looking for with some questions you might have, but I’d appreciate your feedback on what pickups I should upgrade in the HBII.

Thanks in advance!

Just How Unhappy Are You With The Pickups The Guitar Came With? It Sounds Like You Liked Them Fine Until You Started Reading And Now The Force That Causes All Of Us To Chase The Dragon Got You...LOL. Is This Correct? ;)

If I Am Reading Right, You Do Not Play The HB Guitar For The Heavier Stuff So There Are A Few Directions You Could Go. I Will Give Some Options That Have Worked Well For Me In Those Situations. You Could Always Go The USA Version Of The Same Pickup Or I Suggest These.

BKP - Stormy Monday
Suhr - Thornbucker

I don’t hate the pickups, but I can’t deny the room for improvement, so yes, chasing the Dragon haha. I still play heavy on it, but it lends itself to the slower heavy ballads than the choppy riffs.

I’ll look into your suggestions, thank you!

Beware of going down the pickup rabbit hole! If you don’t absolutely despise what’s in there now, you may just find any results from an “upgrade” to be negligible at best. I had a couple of SE245s’ in the past, and was surprised how well I liked the pickups. As much as I wanted to, I couldn’t justify playing the swap game.

Also consider that many guitar purists prefer vintage tone compared to modern, and as a result find themselves listening to various pickup samples that aren't designed to perform the way they'd like.

"Traditional" vs. "Modern" might be the way to categorize this

@Bogner has provided two examples of modern humbuckers that will provide most of what you're searching for. For more traditional tones skewed towards P.A.F.-style pups better designed for the HBII, check

Lindy Fralin "Pure P.A.F.'s"
Lollar Imperial Standard and Low Wind Humbuckers
For brighter, clearer tone, Seymour Duncan. Be sure to listen to sound clips of each pup in action.

Many folks prefer the Bare Knuckles, simply because they sound more aggressive.
The Thornbucker and Thornbucker II pups have a measure of "secret sauce" added in that creates high gain lead, crunch, crispiness, all balanced nicely with harmonics in mind. Thornbuckers are readily available on Reverb both new and used.
Others I've heard of are called Wolftone pups (sp?).

A way to go about this is to simply perform a google search for modern-sounding guitar pickups. Best wishes.

But then the first time I attended the PRS Experience oh so many years ago -- the first thing I heard was Mike Scott and Emil Werstler absolutely shredding a couple of hollow guitars with raging distortion... That opened my eyes to what those guitars can do!

Awesome, thanks for the suggestions. Grateful for at least a place to start, when I’m not even sure what I’m looking for yet haha

Wolfetone pickups are amazing. I just put a Marshallhead bridge and Dr Vintage neck pickup in my CU22, and they sound phenomenal - vintage sounding, but the Marshallhead snarls nicely and the Dr V sings sweetly.

That said, contact them through the form on their website and Wolfe will answer you directly, and steer you towards the right set - and may even custom tweak them for you. Fantastic boutique pickups, and very reasonably priced on top of that. I'd easily pay Bareknuckle price for Wolfetone, or more, but it's nice to not have to spend more.

I’ll take a look at those too while I’m at it!
