I have a 2011 Paul Allender with the passive pups. I’ve never been crazy about the stock pickups and was thinking I’d like to try and get a 80’s hair metal sound from it. My first inclination is to try a Duncan Distortion or Full Shred in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. I’m not crazy about EMG’s fwiw.

Have any of you used these in the Allender or something similar with good results.

For 80's hair metal, in the bridge those guys were mostly JB with a few users of Custom Custom / Distortion / Invader.

For the neck pickup you'll want to choose something visually pleasing and inexpensive, then disconnect it from the toggle because you won't need it.

Finally, locate a Kramer Ferrington to use on power ballads because if your acoustic doesn't look like a shredder electric the audience will think you don't rock.

(Seriously tho, I think JB/Jazz is a good start)

Thanks Ovibos. I know most ran the JB in the bridge. I think George Lynch used a Distortion mostly. Wasn’t sure how the JB would sound in the mahogany body. I think I definitely want a Jazz in he neck though.

As much trouble as the toggles have given me on this it might not be a bad idea to just go for looks the neck pickup had a weird ground issue or something. Had to put a piece of electrical tape between the bottom plate and the pole pieces or it wouldn’t work, hence the journey to new pups.

I like the emg’s on my Allender. What type of amp and pedals are you using?

Due to the fact I no longer gig I only have a Katana 100 and an old SF Vibrochamp. Wish I’d kept my 5150 combo from the ‘90’s. Pedals; I have a modified DS-1, Plexi Drive Deluxe, Blues Driver, Ego compressor, and a Hardwire DL-8 delay.

You should be able to find the sound you like with your gears. Might take some time.

I love my Kat100. Sounds like you'll want to dial in a tone on the Brown channel and then tweak to taste.

Best bridge humbucker I've ever played is the Suhr Aldrich. Thick bass response with a really smooth high end. And if it works for whitesnake it'd probably work for your needs. Or you could try BKP's alnico Nailbomb, which is great for that 80s riff tone.

Idea of how the aldrichs will sound like in an all mahogany guitar.

Big +1 on the Aldrich!

After listening to a lot of video I think I’m leaning towards an Aldrich in the bridge and a Jazz in the neck. The Aldrich seems like a tad smoother JB from what I can tell, but of course trying to actually hear what’s going on in a video is a long shot.

Thanks for all the suggestions!
