Ever notice that gear seems to be getting heavier?

Or maybe I'm getting weaker.

Even the guitars are starting to feel heavy.

I thought to myself, is there a handy tool that I can attach gear to, that will help me lift it and move it around?

The first thing I thought of was a helium balloon. But to lift my 100 pound Mesa Lone Star would take a 15.5 foot diameter balloon. My ceiling isn't that tall. Not practical.

I could use caster boards, but that involves lifting gear onto them, and lifting is the very problem I want to avoid.

Then I remembered: There is a tool for this, and at around $150 on Amazon, they're cheaper than a custom guitar stand:

An engine hoist. That's right. An engine hoist.

I could get an engine hoist for my studio and, boom! Problems are all completely solved!

Need to move an amp head to put in new tubes? Engine hoist.

Need to lift the Lone Star onto a stand to get it off the floor? Engine hoist.

Need to lift the studio monitors to reposition them? Engine hoist.

I mean, these things' uses are only limited by the imagination!

"What's that huge contraption you're using as a guitar stand, Laz?"

"Oh that? It's an engine hoist. Works great for a lot of things."

I used to work at a photographers studio, where there was a track system on the ceiling, so the lights or heavy plate camera could move around freely.

Maybe something like that for “Studio Craptastic”?

Because I know how you like engineered things.

That would actually be pretty cool. It'd also be a good excuse to replace the heinous drop-ceiling.

Have you really thought this through? I mean, how would an engine hoist effect sound waves in the room. :p
Probably no worse than a very, very large guitar stand? 😅

On the other hand, they actually fold up and I could roll it into the storage room. Though it would certainly be a conversation piece in the studio room...

You forgot to ask .....core hoist or SE hoist?????

I was going to buy one for my music room but for that kind of money it really needs to have OHSC included.

I think it's bull$hit to buy the hoist then have to buy the case too......

All kidding aside.....I gave serious consideration to a handicap lift for my Ford van.

I will have an elevator in my house. Wife says no and thinks I'm kind of joking but am not joking and I will do it.

Hand truck. No home should be without one.
I had one for a long time. A great tool.

But if you want to, say, lift an amp head off the top of the amp, or move a studio monitor from the top of the stand, it's not going to make that easier. For that, I need a hoist!

A lot of heavy machinery shops have ceiling mounted bridge cranes on tracks so they can be moved to any position in the room.

You might have to duck under it, but what price can you put on convenience!
Alnus said the same thing about a photo shop he worked in once. It's a great idea.

Actually, my basement ceiling could be as high as ten feet if I removed the drop ceiling and built up the walls.

Which, I know, fat chance!
