All about bicycles

Another Idaho Gravel Enthusiasts (I.G.E.) southeast Idaho group ride. This time we connected the Arimo valley to Lava Hot Springs and back.

I went to look at new helmets yesterday, having seen a sale on a very highly-rated Giro model. Talking to the fellow at the LBS, he said he and his girlfriend have really been enjoying Sena’s intercom helmets. They have a transceiver, mic, speakers, and BT all in the helmet.

Their R1 model was too tight for me, but I tried an R2 Evo today and it was a good fit. Sena has a nice sale on them along with a hefty veteran’s discount. An adult medium size fit my five year-old. We’ve got large heads… The LBS matched Sena’s price for $127, compared to regular retail at $199. Got one for me, Vince, and my wife. Should be nice to be able to talk easily on a ride!

In other bike news, Vince rode his bike yesterday without training wheels for the first time. Stopping isn’t a comfortable thing, but he’s got straight ahead and left/right turns down. He was very proud of himself!

Kiddo and I went out on a playground tour this morning. We visited five different playgrounds, stopping at one twice when we doubled back on part of the way home. A bit over eight miles.

It’s a gorgeous day here, with sun, mid-level clouds, and temps around 60F. I was surprised that we were the only people at all of the playgrounds we visited.

The intercom helmets are awesome! They were great on the ride and also great at the playgrounds for chatting from a distance.

Today I was feeling a bit bushed, but to heck with that. Weather was dayum fine pushing 20C so set off in long pants and t-shirt with fingerless gloves.
Felt like heading East on the road with Bear Creek Park as the destination.

I like checking out the local community garden on the way...

Heading East on a busy road...

Skate park on King George Hwy...

Enter the park...

Surrey Arts Centre...

Newly minted Bear Creek Stadium/track...

The track used to be open, but now fenced off. Gotta sell tickets I guess...

Kids train station...

Cricket anyone?

Took the greenway home with a water stop...

Started to get a tad nippy on the way back, but excellent to get out and super happy not to need a pile of layers!

It was a lovely 20 C when I started my ride yesterday at 7:30. By the time I finished at 10:30 it was 32 C. Welcome to Florida. ;)

I would have hated it as a kid. I went out to hear nature, not people nattering.

We were never out on our bikes to hear nature. We were out exploring our area, everything from biking to the MSP airport to downtown St. Paul and an 1850s army fort. By the time our group got our first ten-speeds, we were ranging pretty far. Being able to talk to each other at a distance would have been very helpful. We never intentionally dropped anyone, but it happened sometimes.

Before we were at an age to go exploring, I think we’d have used them in playing bike tag and hanging around the neighborhood, too. Bicycles were a very social thing for us.

I’ve been having such a fun time on the bike! My son and I use it to take him to school. Once I drop him off, I get to let loose a little. Today my pulse hit 184. Sounds high, eh? It feels pretty exhilarating to push it. When I was 25 years younger and 100lbs lighter, I’d get it up above 190 for brief stretches. I should probably make better choices.

RC, great that you’re enjoying the bike and your time with the son. You inspired me. Tomorrow I’m going to start working on becoming 25 years younger.

Just back from a nice Fathers Day ride with my son. Hadn't been out for a couple of weeks so this was a welcome event. Just a quick blast down the Greenway to Mud Bay on a lovely sunny 20C day...

Headed through a small park where there were some pony clubs awarding prizes to various youth equestrian groups...

My son rides a 2022 Giant Talon E+2...

Back through Watershed Park we stopped at the water station which is supplied by an aquifer 70m below...

Great ride. Now for a beers, some order in supper and a movie!

We had a fun ride this morning. Went to Lock and Dam #2 on the Mississippi. Our timing was very lucky, as we got to see a barge going through the lock.

A causeway on the way to the dam provided some fun rock climbing for the little guy.

There was a sculpture garden on the way, too.

And a cardboard castle in the regional park for a kids' program.

Awesome!

A cloudy day, and cooler than it should be at 17C. Rained a lot yesterday, and a bit this morning.
Wanted to get out anyway, so off to the sports fields...

Replacing the turf is in progress on a couple of the fields...

Usually the kids are playing on a Sunday afternoon, but today the big boys were out...

Wandered off around the hood and was not sorry that I wasn't Costco shopping...

Looking first SE and then NW at rail tracks slicing King Geo Hwy...

Pondering...

Heading home...
