Adjusting stoptail studs under tension?

I made a newbie mistake of adjusting my stoptail studs under tension, and I have a couple questions:

Is there a way to tell if I may have damaged the studs and/or bridge? What could potentially happen?
Can someone explain why the studs should be adjusted with the strings detuned?

Thanks!

Take off the strings look for scoring on the pasts and look at the intonation adjusting allen screws to see if they are bent.
If the scoring is minimal or non existent you should be fine.
The reason you release the tension is the intonation adjusting screw can dig into the posts under tension and damage them.
There is a good chance your bridge is still fine tho

This is really the only gripe area I have on my PRS. I'm constantly tinkering with the bridge height and action on all of my guitars and the idea of having to detune the guitar every time I want to make an adjustment is really off putting. I inevitably don't bother and just adjust under full tension. I know it's wrong. I know it's scoring the bridge posts. But it's just too much hassle.
