Today I loaded up the family and took a drive over Medano Pass - which drops into the back of the Great Sand Dunes. It goes over the mountains you see in the background.
The Great Sand Dunes are the highest in North America; a true phenomenon given their location.
This time of year, there is a river that runs around the edge of the dunes. It's a product of the melting snow in the high country. You can see it below in this photo. By the end of June it will be gone.
Before we left, everyone got to play on the massive dunes. Even the hounds.
The sand was so hot (by 3PM) that my wife literally got blisters on her toes. Roxie and Hank beat the heat by taking a dip. This is the mountain we drove over to get here.
The trail was well maintained and there were 5 or 6 river crossings so it was a lot of fun.
On our way out of the National Park, we all hiked up into Zepata Falls and played in the water. It's also run-off from the melting snow and was quite refreshing. You can see (from the chunk of ice) that it's still thawing in some places.
We were all quite tired by the time we headed home. The pups were beat. It was a good day. A very good day.
