I've recently got a really nice review on one of my latest songs from a respected recording artist/songwriter/music historian that I am going to use for promotion. In a recent phone conversation I asked him for permission to use it and he was more than OK with it and even encouraged me to do so. It got me thinking of a stellar review I got from another recording artist that I should use also.

The thing is, I would like to get his permission to quote him but he's a 5-time grammy nominated cat and really hard to get a hold of. A great guy, known him for years, his and my parents even went to high school together but I don't want to step on any toes or look like a publicity hungry parasite.

What's the written or unwritten rules there? Anybody with any insight?

Thanks fam.

Is the review in the public domain, is it actually published anywhere?

As long as it's a direct quote, I don't think there's any problem using it.

Is he on social media... Twitter, Facebook? Can you get hold of him via an agent / manager?

Although it shouldn't be much of an issue it's probably just good etiquette to get their permission even if their final response is "of course! You didn't need to ask."

I can email him but again, he's just a real busy cat, the last time I ran into him he admits he can't get to all his emails. He teaches a class at the SF jazz center so maybe I might just stop in after one of his lectures to try to reach him.
