Ok... I'm sold on the guitar now. Skip to the last 1/4 of the vid to see the guitar really put through the paces with some proper rock high gain.

Nice but I wasn't thrilled with the set up of that Marshall. Cleans were rather sterile.

sounds heavy, but i was annoyed by the Guy's nothing-being-there mustach!

too bad, probably not for my wallet

You could get a "first gen" CE with aftermarket 5909s and have a "proper" CE for less than one of these neutered second generations

yes. very true. But, I like my instruments to be at least in semi-decent condition. Its getting harder and harder to find a well taken care of CE. Its incredibly hard to find a maple top CE in great condition with anything better than garbage figuring on the top. So, knowing I can get a good lead tone out of it through my JVM, I'm pretty much sold on it now. It doesn't change my unhappiness with PRS for the downgrades. However, I don't see any alternative at this point. I'll throw the Mann trem on it. Or, I may just order it from the Mann himself and have him do the package deal.

More detailed demo from Sound Affects Premiere with some great tones...]

Different strokes for different folks. I just hate how everyone resorts to jazzy and blues licks for these demos, PRS included. the majority of people playing this are going to rock and shred on it. That's the nature of maple necked guitars with buckers. Its born to do that. He got some decent tones but, like the PRS demos, I thought it was sticking a square peg in a round hole.

Those pickups sound like I'd like them through my own gear with my own settings. That said...

This is exactly what I have. And it's fantastic.

I will probably check out the new version if I get a chance, but I like to buy used and am not particular about condition, so the old CEs are fine with me in case I get the itch to buy another.

That SoundsAffect demo was great.
Looks like a core model!
Satin neck and 24 frets? And 85/15s? For the price of an S2?
What are the downsides again?

Does this devalue 85/15s, in a sense? I'm just swapping my 59/09s for 85/15s but I'm wondering if it's the wrong thing to do - why don't they put 59/09s in S2 guitars - are they deemed "better" pups?

The problem with shred for me, is it's not a very good indicator of tone. I can tell a whole lot more about a guitar listening to a 5 note blues lick than a 56 note shred lick. Funny I also associate blues/pentatonic with rock (think Angus Young)...

Maybe that's just me and my ears tho.

I think all the demos sounded really good. The shredder in the first demo got a great tone IMHO for that style, as did the others, all being individuals with different tonal tastes. What I like about the first demo is that usually I don't hear much guitar in metal styles, I usually just hear amp. This time, I heard guitar along with amp, and that's what was cool.

But what's important is that a player can get an idea of what the guitar is capable of in these different styles by watching several videos like these. Then you can more easily understand what the guitar may or may not do for you as a player. At least, you can hear enough to decide if you want to try one out.

Anyway, thanks for posting these, everyone.

By the way, it's kind of stressful watching guys who can play and knowing that my hand is going to take a long time to come back to strength - if it ever comes all the way back, I'll be so happy!

I do like some of the metal/prog style of the demo, but the bass frequencies are boomy and borderline out of control. Somehow through all that though, Les is right, you can hear the tone of the instrument....and that sounds really good. I'd like to see some out of the norm demos too. But even most of the Archon demos aren't great IMO.
