`88 Studio neck pocket?

This is a picture of my `88 Studio. If you look closely you can see what looks like what once was a neck pocket or pickup cavity at the base of the neck. The guitar has always been this way and never had any work done to it. I guess my question here is twofold, 1; what was going on here during the build and 2, can the divot in the top be repaired not to show?

I don't know if this will help you but all Studios had something like that.
The neck was the same as the 2 humbucker models but it wouldn't fit with only a single coil route in the neck position.

Thanks Jazzedout, evidently this is something in the original rout for the pickup/neck that is later filled in when a single coil is installed instead of a humbucker pickup. I guess if it's a birthmark of the guitar it can stay.
