Now that the 57/08s are available for purchase I have been kicking around this idea and wanted to get some feedback on it from you pickup swapping gurus.

I purchased my Tremonti because I wanted a singlecut with a slimmer neck (i have small hands so the Pattern cut concerned me) my Custom 24 is a pattern reg neck and I absolutely love it, and it was easy enough to adjust to the pattern thin cut.

The one thing that keeps me from playing the guitar more are the pickups. I can dial in my roadster and Archon to sound great with the 59/09s however as soon as I switch to the Tremonti, what were clean tones on the treble pickup now breakup and what were warm tones on the bass pickup are now muddy and lack clarity.

I am kicking around the idea of replacing the Tremonti pickups with the 57/08s and also replacing the tone pots with push/pull ones to take advantage of that feature as well.

I know the Tremonti is not weight relieved like other SC guitars, which may or may not have a drastic affect on tone, but wanted to see if someone had done something similar.

Thoughts?

57/08's have been featured in many a PRS guitar with good results. I love them in my SE Akesson (also not weight relieved, that I know of) and they sound great. I wouldn't hesitate for a second to put a set in that Tremonti.

The other SC guitars aren't weight relieved either.

I can tell you from experience that the 57/08s sound great in a Singlecut.

Here's a fun thread necro before I place my order...am I crazy for wanting to pick up a 3rd push/pull pot for my Custom 24?

The issue is when I play on Sundays, the other guitarist has an American Deluxe strat and since we use the same amp and don't really have time to re-EQ the humbuckers in the Custom 24 hit a little bit harder than his single coils and its very audible the amount of drive/power the Custom 24 puts out over the Strat. I am thinking a push/pull pot to split the pickup when neck only or bridge only would help tremendously.

So moral of the story, replace Tremonti pickups with the 57/08s and replace tone pots with push/pulls to tame the beast, and replace tone pot in Custom 24.

I dont trust myself to do this, so I will be having them installed at the shop where I bought the guitars.

So strange how we all perceive things so differently. I was just looking at an Experience CU24 with 59/09's which I know nothing about so I googled them. Most threads I read said that they found them muddy and that the 57/08 while less hot was more articulate blah blah blah (not members of this forum but I'm sure there are people on here who don't necessarily love the 59/09's). Shows that you really have to take "Interweb experts" views with a grain of salt and try and "get hands on" to make a truly informed decision for yourself.

I've never owned a guitar with what I would describe as having had or muddy or unusable pick ups. Seem's you can always get a good or at least acceptable tone with a bit of guitar and amp knob fiddling and failing that put something like an Xotic Effects RC booster in between amp and crappy sounding guitar and you can get tone Nirvana even with a $250 Epi.

I also find that I can find a use for and enjoy lo-fi / cheap pickups just as much as I do my PRS, Fender CS, Gibbs 57 Classics, DiMarzio something or other or even my original 63 Strats pickups. Ohhh, Pre CBS 63 Strat pickups (in my best Homer Simpson voice).

I agree, that in most guitars the pickups aren't what makes or breaks the instrument. The guitar will sound the way it sounds, pickups might enhance or emphasize certain aspects but it will still sound like that guitar. I certainly have had pickups that I like more than others in certain instruments, but I've also had the opposite, where I swap pickups and don't hear the difference I was hoping for.

Regarding the 59/09's, I just got one in the mail to throw in my S2 Satin 22, hopefully I'll soon know how I like them compared to 57/08's :D
