I believe in the past i have read something about different variations in the sound of 57/08 pups in relation to newer/older versions. is this just a myth or can anyone shed some light on this? thanks

hey shawn, what was the difference in tone (especially with the neck pups) from the earlier versions to the final version?

I was just going to answer "yes" but Shawn took care of that!

The set I bought for my Cu24 didn't float my boat but several subsequent sets were angelic.

Not sure about different versions but the ones that came in my CU24 are killer.

For me 53/10s are too warm and middy, 59/09s are good but a little hotter than I normally go for (still would like to get a set sometime). 57/08s are the closest to a Tele on Steroids I've heard, which is what I go for with a humbucker.

57/08s are definitely brighter but I like a bright bordering on harsh sound. I crank the treble on my Blackface amps. I have high end hearing loss though, so go figure but to me mids and warm sounds like mud. I like country in my rock n' roll, and a little rock n' roll in my country hence why I play a lot of pedal steel licks in my rock solos and Chuck Berry-isms in my country solos and the 57/08s are PERFECT for that. They sound great split and full HB.

The 57/08's are my absolute favorite of the PRS line, and can handle anything for me outside of high gain settings (but that's not what I play most of the time). I have some very early ones in a nitro-finished 245 and they have noticeably lower output than the TM etched set in my pre-V12 Cu24. Both are very similar in voicing, but the hotter pickups are obviously going to behave a little different with the amp turned up.

I'd like to understand more about the 3.3M resistor that was used on the tone pot to darken the pickups a hair and the effect that has. (My extent of understanding towards electricity starts and stops with the traditional light switch up/down situation.) To my ears the 57/08 pickups without the resistor, combined with rolling back the tone knob, didn't sound the same as the original wiring. Is the resistor still part of the wiring with the newer versions? Is there really a difference or were my ears lying to me and telling me what they thought I wanted to hear?

We went through 4 or 5 different versions of the 57/08 before Paul was happy with them.

Shawn:
I've heard that 57/08s started out as and are a derivative of RPs. Is that true?

While I'm not a big fan of PRs, I really dig 57/08s. And while a fan of 57/08s, I even like 59/09s more (My favorite bridge pups). Isn't it nice to have so many great choices?

Sort of, yes. The McCarty pickups were our first real foray into the vintage-vibe pickup arena and the RP's were an evolution of the McCarty pups. We took what we learned from the RP's and used that to develop the early 57/08's. We took what we learned from the early 57/08's to develop what the 57/08's finally became. Just to show the family tree isn't a telephone pole, the #7, 245, DGT and Mira pups all branch off from the McCarty tree as well.

I only have one set of 57/08's and they're in my Al Di. It's an early model so they are the un-etched version. Not sure where that puts them on the evolutionary ladder but they are phenomenal. Depending on the style, I like the 57/08 bridge better than the 59/09 bridge but just by a hair. The 53/10 neck though is just incredible - great 'woman' tones. These are all in different guitars so there may be some other factors to consider.

Strange. I had a very early non etched set of 57/08s and several sets from the last few years. Going by ear and measuring the output, they are all very close. In any case, I really dig all of them! I find them very similar to Gibson 57 classics, which I also love, but are slightly darker and have slightly more output.
