Those of you who have had a chance to hear the difference, how would you say the tone changed in the 245 with this newer pickup? Do you think it sounds more like the 59/09?

IMHO: The 5815 is PRS' best of the current range. It has the heat of the 5909 and the warmth of the 5708. I always found each lacking in one of those categories. New pickups always change the tone. If you want a 5708 with more punch or a 5909 with more warmth, the 5815 is it.

I have the 58/15s in my McCarty, and had the 57/08s in other PRSes and in my McCarty Singlecut. I haven't tried swapping them, and won't, because I'm not that pickup-swapping dude, but...

I really like both pickups a lot. Both are great at what they do, IMHO.

But I don't hear 57/08s or 59/09s in the 58/15s. I hear a more open sounding pickup in the 58/15, one that's closer to the open high end of a P-90 but without the noise, and with a richer midrange.

Also...my 85/15 in the CU24 is a hotter pickup than the 58/15 in my McCarty, and it's every bit as good a pickup as the 58/15, though obviously in the CU24 it's different anyway.

I think PRS is making seriously great pickups these days.

Agreed.

I've had uncovered 57/08 (still have 'em), covered 59/09 (sold) and uncovered 85/15s.
Does anybody know what magnet type each uses?

57/08: amazing. nice quack when tapped and a grit when you hit the string in bridge mode with distortion. Great classic tone.

59/09: I didn't get on with the covered aspect of the pups - it kills the top-end and openness for me. Apart from that, they were much hotter than 57/08s. Very good, little less quack but likely due to the covers. Maybe a little too hot for me but still very good. I know 59/09s are overwound 57/08s but did I not also read that they are 57/08s that came out a bit hot by mistake (the process for making them isn't perfect)?

85/15: Not like the above two... there is less quack yet at the same time, the split sounds are very nice - they made me do a double-take when I first heard them, anyway. I find the bridge distorted is a teeny tiny tad harsh, maybe not as nice as the 57/08 but on the whole they are fab pickups. The band prefer them. I've been playing them more than the other one.

They're all good, though.

I have 2 Core PRS, a 2013 Experience PRS CU24 10 top, a 2000 McCarty and a First Edition SSky with a 17 Ser. Nr. The guys at PRS said mine was one of the first 5 off the assembly line. I love all of them bone stock. The Custom 24 is a Stradivarius, The McCarty is a Guarneri and the SSky is a Fleta…..
