This is only my own opinion, of course, but I think that if a pickup has had changes made so that the tone is different, the different versions should be made clear to the customer. If my TM pup sounds different from an unetched version by design, is the tone still a "'57" tone? Of course PRS can call its own products whatever they like, but I would be disappointed if I had heard an earlier version, loved it, and ordered one ...only to find out it was a completely different pickup design, called by the same name. I happen to love my 57/08TMs. I did buy my Hollowbody II without playing, or even hearing, it (which I would not do with many brands!), but I had a good idea of how it would sound and feel, as PRSi are pretty consistent, well-made guitars. -And we all know to what the "57" in "57/08" refers, so that family of tonal quality or qualities is pretty explicitly named.
...As an afterthought, if the 57/08 pups have been changed to sound better, wouldn't the later and more "evolved" or "tonally refined" (or whatever) of the pickups be the most "valuable" ...at least to a musician (as opposed to a collector)?
I realize that the pups "sounding better" is an opinion, but I like the tones of my PRS CE-22 and the other PRSi I have heard, and therefore PRSh's applied philosophy and methods of producing and ideas about what constitutes "good tone", as well as PRS' reputation for quality, consistency, and good customer service, or I would not have bought one sight unseen. If PRSh approved of the design changes, then the tone is probably "better" in that PRSh liked it better. And we all like his ideas about tone, right?
...Oh, yeah, I forgot about those people who replace the pickups, which I would do as a last resort. Why buy a $3+K guitar, only to take out its heart? -So much better to change the tone pot or cap or the wiring. I bought my HBII for the sound as much as for anything, and the 57/08TMs are at the heart of that.
