Hi guys,
Quick question: with your volume pot at 10, how much louder are the 59/09 than the 57/08? In decibels?

Long version:
I have recently been trying out a Custom 24 which had 59/09s. I am mostly looking for fairly thick metal sounds but love the versatility of the 59/09s which would leave the door open for branching out. I used the 59/09 neck pickup through an Xotic LP Boost and then a Blackstar HT-Metal and that gave me a lot of range in sound from the guitar being at 1 to it being at 10. That was plugged into a Mesa Dual Rectifier. Even with the boost pedal I still had to turn the guitar up to 10 to get the full bodied sound I was looking for. A similar sound to what I know from e.g. EMG 85 pickups.

Someone suggested a P24 since I also liked the idea of a piezo bridge. The P24 however has a slightly different pickup, the 57/08. I listened to some demos comparing the 59/09 and 57/08 and the 57/08 seem to be quieter still. So I am wondering if I'll need to come up with even more gain when using the 57/08.

Thanks!

Yep I know of the \m/ pickup. But I like the ability to back off with the 59/09. I have considered the \m/ though. Got any demos? How would you compare them to either the 59/09 or the 57/08?

Thanks

The metal is a ceramic magnet fire breather. You won't get the volume roll off dynamics that you will with the 50 series. I have mentioned before that PRS needs to up the output of a 59/09 by about 25% and give us an alnico pickup with serious balls but yet retain those lovely dynamics when you are tinkering with the volume knob. Someone will probably suggest dragon 2s, but honestly, those are nasty nasally pickups. PRS needs a new design that bridges that gap.

You are already boosting the signal going into the ht-metal and then sending it into a high gain amp. If you increase the wraps you will lose all your highs and you will just get flub. If you can't get the amount of gain you want then your only option is probably going to be actives to keep any sort of tone in there. What exactly are you playing? Have you looked up the gear being used by those artists? I just can't fathom this setup not being enough.

Not true. I get all kinds of roll off dynamics with that pickup everyday.

Whew! I thought I just bought two sets of useless M pickups!!! You probably felt the WTH vibe just now.
Oh wait..ahem... \m/ pickups have no dynamics, volume knob is ineffective! Now, please send them my way and I'll dispose of them properly - especially that uncovered set!

To the original question...
I can raise my 5708 higher than 5909. So I suppose there is some volume difference, but it's not super noticeable to me.

I didn't even know you could wire a volume pot to a \m/ pickup. I thought it would just spark if you did.

I have the Pickups in my DGT. Roll off great, extremely versatile and not just for metal. Clean up very well too. Jazz is one of the genres you can use the m pickup for.
