So many, and the ranking changes constantly. Mark Knopfler. Eric Clapton. John 5. The guys in Ghost. Alex Lifeson. Davy Knowles. David Grissom. Donna Grantis. Angus Young. Davey Johnstone. Jeff Healey. Adrian Belew. Steve Vai. Joe Satriani. Ted Nugent. And so, so, so many more.

But the ones that made it to my Private Stock...

Impossible. I have enough trouble getting a top 10. Something like this...

Jimi Hendrix
Eddie Van Halen
Robin Trower
Alan Holdsworth
and MANY others have been in the top 5 in the last 40 years, including

John Petrucci
Alex Lifeson
Al DiMeola
Jeff Beck
Yngwie Malmsteen
Steve Morse
Michael Schenker
Steve Howe
Frank Marino
Steve Vai
Joe Satriani
... it's late and I'll probably look at this thread tomorrow and already have 5 more. But the top 4 I mentioned have ALWAYS been in my top 10 over many years.

I could go on and on.

Nothing extraordinarily unique. Your typical classic rock n' roll/blues suspects you've all heard of. But they are my faves nonetheless.

I'm more into bluesy improv and raw guitar players who at times are even a bit sloppy. Page being perfect example. I'll take that anyday over fast, technically proficient, or as some would call "fluid" guitar playing. Yes it's great, yes it takes serious skill, but to me it just doesn't do anything for me in the same way I'm not a fan of "insert artist here". Not a knock on their ability, it just doesn't get my rocks off.

I was never into the whole 'shred' thing, and when I like players like EVH, my favorite moments are not the blazing speed, tapping, fretboard burning moments that get most guitarists who like him excited. I dig into the bluesier side of Eddie who started out copying Clapton's licks. I feel like a LOT of the 80s copycats got the technical aspect (or tried to) but totally forgot about Ed's bluesier lead playing and killer rhythm and riffs. "Eruption" does nothing for me really where as most guitarists and non-guitarists alike go gaga for it. It's great, and it's cool and hard to do but it's not what I like about EVH. If that was all he did, I wouldn't be a fan, but I feel that's what draws most to him and that's fine but it's not my thing and I think there is more to him than that.

1, Mick Ronson = Made me want !
2, Peter Frampton = made me play !
3, Jeff Healy = Amazing !
4, Jeff Beck = Mind Blowing !
5, David Gilmour = Close your eyes and drift away !
And so many more that i'd have to write a book !!!

A Big Hell Yeah for Dave "The Godfather" Meneketti, Sadly Underrated ARTIST!!!
1. Neal Schon
2. Jim Matheos
3. Ace Frehley
4. John Petrucci
5. Adrian Smith / Dave Murray Combo

Also can't do just 5...

Eddie Van Halen made me want to get a guitar.
Randy Rhoads made me want to get a pointy guitar.
Eric Clapton made me want to get a black Strat style guitar with a white pickguard.
Stevie Ray Vaughan made me want to get an actual Fender Stratocaster and put 13s on it.
Jeff Beck made me want to give up practicing, because I would never, ever be that good.
Billy Gibbons made me want to learn to actually play the guitar I already had.
Joe Walsh made me want to learn to keep my guitar playing simple.
Keith Richards made me want to learn to keep it even simpler than Joe Walsh.
Warren Haynes made me want to listen to the other musicians to find my space.

Oh, OK. Another 4?

Van Halen.
Nuno Better court.

Too many others to choose from. People rip Yngwie but I think he's great.

For another style I'd say Vicente Amigo.

Yeah, never understood the Yngwie hatred out there. Guy has so much Hendrix and Blackmore in his blood pumping along with the Bach, Paganini, and Handel, and his vibrato is one of my favorites of anybody, right up there with Leslie West and Rev. Willy.

+1 on Matheos! Criminally underrated guitarist and band.

Actually listening to Arch/Matheos as I type this.

I'd say
John Petrucci- Dream theater
Eddie Van Halen - van Halen
Marco Sfogli - solo
Fredrik Åkesson - Opeth
Kee Marcello - Europe
