Was going to ramble on about our gig tonite. Kinda old-school.
But I've been thinking about the "best" rock guitarists.
Obviously, they have to be technically superb, move it forward, be famous and have an influence that is beyond impeccable.

All bull****, here are my five ... YMMV.

1. EVH ... sorry, just is.
2. Hendrix
3. Clapton
4. Slash
5. T-Bone Walker

Funny...seems to slightly change every other week...but right now...
Big Al Lifeson, DiMeola, Jeff Beck, Steve Morse, Kerry Livgren...

Speaking of Ramble on how about Jimmy Page...

...or Tony Iommi. I'd venture to guess Black Sabbath had a much larger influence on metal and hard rock than anybody but Hendrix

My list of influence

Nuno Bentoncourt
Paul Gilbert
old EVH
Eric Johnson
Page
Howe yes

I can't play like any of these guys so they influence who I listen to and enjoy!

Funny.... I started to make my list and looked up at yours. The first 3 I typed were the same as yours.

Gilbert
Bettoncourt
Van Halen
Rabin
and 50 other guys.

By the way, "best" is a lofty term. I'm gonna say "favorites."

In no particular order... (Except Gilmour)

Gilmour
Knopfler
Garry Moore
Hendrix
Bonamassa

The best? Not necessarily, it they are the top 5 guitarists that have shaped my playing over the years.

For me it's not just the fingers. They needed to have come up with melodic solos that make you sit back, close your eyes, and wonder how they thought of that. It's hard to limit the list to five, but here is what I'm thinking at the moment:

Gilmour
Moore
Santana
Scholz (hey Boston was huge when I was 14)
Schon (big Journey fan back in the day)
If I get 6 it's Howe,
and 7 would be Livgren

now you know how old I am!

I don't do "rock" too much and since people aren't adhering strictly to the guidelines, I'll just add dudes who I like that play distorted guitars.

EVH
Gary Miller (Bad Brains)
Andy Gill (Gang of Four)
Jeff Hanneman (Slayer)
Neil Schon (I find it impossible to not smile when listening to Journey)
and James Hetfield had a good run.

Always. When people try to put up best lists, it's usually "favourites of the most people that the fewest other people will argue with".

My Influences / Favs
Robin Trower
Jeff Beck
David Gilmore
Michael Schenker ( UFO )
Early Ted Nugent ( just had to my first real concert so over the top )

Ok, if I go by the original post, I would toss out these 5 "rock" guitarists:
EVH
Hendrix
Clapton
Iommi
Malmsteen (he did usher in a new era of playing/popularity. Although the credit could easily go to Mike Varney).

If I'm listing my top 5, in no particular order:
Lifeson
M. Schenker
Moore
Clapton
May (if for no other reason than his tone).
