Hi.
I recently got a SC58 that i absolutly love and now i want more of that PRS mojo. Im thinking about a double cut (Mc style) and have been looking at the 408mt, i want something thats differs from the sc58. I like the versitality of the tones you can get.

Now i would like to know some pros and cons before i take the big plunge and get me one of these bad boys.. Perhaps as soon as tomorrow!

In my experience, all things being equal, the McCarty and SC58 are very different guitars. I actually prefer the McCarty platform myself most of the time. I find that double cuts are usually more open sounding and have less natural compression than the single cutaway models. Ymmv, but I say go for it, it will be a very different guitar i think.

408's are amazing guitars, IMO they are also a very singular sounding, yet pay tribute to the PRS legacy. The pickups can cover a lot of ground. This video is a very good demonstration of exactly what you can do with a 408. I was lucky to get one with a IRW neck with brushstroke birds and an almost artist grade quilt 10 top. Definitely worth it.

In my opinion, these are fairly different guitars. First and foremost, 408 pickups are very different than what you likely have in your SC58 (I think mine has 57/08s, but I can't remember for sure...but in any case, they are way different than 408's.) I don't have a straight 408, but a Signature Limited, but I think that they are pretty similar... and a good compliment to the SC58. Another thing you might consider, if you're OK buying new.... The new 30th CU24s with the 85/15 pickups would be a great counter point to your SC58.

Like Aristotle, I've rocked Singlecuts (both SC58 and SC245) and 408/Signature Ltds at the same time and found them a super complement to one another.

Right now I'm playing a McCarty Singlecut and a 30th Anniversary CU24, and I agree that's also a great counterpoint.

Though I'll say that the ability of the 408 to achieve a great range of single coil and blended tones is pretty darn awesome, and all things being equal, it's a hard combination to beat unless you specifically want that 30th Anniversary 85/15 thing that I do think is more humbucker by nature.

I think we'd all agree that playing both is a very good idea to see what works best for you.

Thanks for the feedback.. Im just hours away from trading a les paul for a 408 whale blue hopefully. The one thing that keeps me wondering if its a go, is that this 408 has a pattern thin neck. And i love the pattern neck that i have on the sc58. Well hope i love it.. Might suit that guitar better.. Who knows!?

My 408MT is the best guitar I have ever owned.
I like the way it sounds, the body carves on it, and it is a joy to play.

I had an SC245 and a 408 with pattern thin at the same time. No problem going back and forth.

I have yet to try a PRS SC but I do have 3 variations of 408, name it a 408MT BRW, a Paul's Guitar and a Brushstroke 24. Compare to my '87 Pre-historic LP standard, they are very different, and all 3 although very similar but are also different as well.

IMHO, 408 variations are great and they are fairly unique sounding. They will compliment any guitars really well.
