This past weekend, my family flew from Sacramento, CA to New York to attend the 30th Annual National Down Syndrome Society (NDSS) Buddy Walk in Central Park. Just before the Buddy Walk, there is a 90 minute presentation on two JumboTron screens in Times Square featuring about 500 persons with Down Syndrome. Just a few seconds of fame for each person. My Daughter was selected this year, so we had to make the trip! There is a tiny thread of PRS here - the NDSS booth had a few copies of the “Mark Tremonti Sings Frank Sinatra” CD for sale. Mr. Tremonti very generously donated all of the profits for that CD to the NDSS. I of course picked up a copy. For those who don’t know, Mark has a young daughter with DS.
Here’s a pic of the Buddy Walk, over 1800 participants, over $221,000 raised.
Here’s a pic of my daughter with Miss Delaware Teen USA, she also has DS, and is one of the first Miss America Teen contestants with an intellectual disability. The wheel chair is to help our daughter out on days with lots of ground to cover.
We arrived late Friday afternoon, and left Monday afternoon. We squeezed in two walks from the hotel to Times Square, the Times Square Jumbo Tron event, the buddy walk, Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Empire State Building at night (awesome by the way), the 9/11 Memorial and Museum (highly recommended. If you were alive and old enough to understand, it is very, very powerful, and very emotional to see), New York Pizza! (Bucket list for me) a Hot dog, and hot nuts from a cart, the M&M store (daughter) and the Hershey store on the way back from the M&M store). I could never live there, but it was a wonderful weekend. Oh, and for locals who seem to get the rep of being rude, people were super nice to us all weekend.
