I am having second thoughts about selling/trading my MT15 for the Archon 50.

What major benefits am I gaining going for the Archon? Is it that much of an upgrade from the MT15?

Most of my playing will be at the house, and I like to play mostly hard rock and metal with a little clean. I do like how dark and ballsy the MT is, and it’s giving me second thoughts if I should keep it or get the Archon

My only reason to swap would be that from what I hear, the 50 has a better master volume, allowing a little easier access to lower volume tones. Other than that, the amps are similar... Archon is USA made and quieter, larger, would also make you part of our exclusive earth ruling Archon owners club.

Pretty much this!

I had an MT-15 and still have an Archon 50 watt head. I've had the Archon a couple of years, and ordered the MT-15 when they were announced. I had it for about 8 months. The main reason I kept the Archon was the more user friendly Master Volume. That sharp spike on the MT-15 was just too much. Sound wise, similar. I think the cleans on the Archon are better. I also like the fact that it is US made.

Depends on what you're looking for. Small and portable, stick with the MT-15. Something a little more volume friendly, grab the Archon.

he’s mostly playing at home.

I saw that.

I still go with the 50W version because I’m that guy who does that. :)

Heck, I’ve got a 100 Watt amp that never leaves my basement studio. Tighter bass, more headroom, more delicious goodness.

You don’t have to turn it up all the way, and master volumes are pretty good these days. My studio monitors are 360 Watts RMS each, but I don’t exceed 85 db in the room. Extra power means the speakers don’t fart out in the low frequencies.

JX! I’m old! Do not mess with my head!

If you do, I get all confused and wander the streets in my underwear until the police realize I’m one of those old dudes who does that, and bring me home in a blanket, and everyone says they were so worried, but in fact their main worry is that I might need expensive long-term care...

It was effects loops that were the Devil! I have to hang garlic around my neck and ward off evil spirits when I’m near an effects loop!

I run the PRS amps around 3/4 up on the masters, but I don’t use much gain.

But but... if you sell it, Archon tell you you'll have MT promises!

You’re a pun genius, you realize that, right? Time to get into competition...

I mean who even knew there was such a thing, but with the Internet, anything you can think of has been thought of and it’s on YouTube. And it has 412,000 subscribers.

Still. You oughta turn pro...

[whispers into the mic]

“Hello ladies and gentlemen, welcome to The Masters, the most hallowed pun match in the world, brought to you by Yugo, The ‘I Go Where Yugo Automobile’. On today’s leader board, DMatthews is up by two puns on his longtime competitor, Sergio DeBlanc.

Last month, Sergio shocked the pun world by winning the French Pun Open by when he deftly avoided the trite trap on the 17th rabbit hole. The question is, can D hold off S., and wear the green jacket? What do our experts say?

For that we turn to perhaps one of the greatest punsters in the modern history of the game, Mark Twain, who is credited with being the first to say ‘Denial isn’t just a river in Egypt.’ Mark, who wins today?”

“Well, it’s a sonny day here on Mother’s Day in Detroit, and...”

“Ouch! Mark, that wasn’t a very good pun...”

“Well of course not, I’ve been feeling rather grave since 1910, when I died. But you’ll dig me later.”

“Yeesh! Another stinker!”

“Perhaps you didn’t hear the part where I mentioned that I’m decomposing, which is normally a somewhat stench-inducing activity. Incidentally, Les, you should consider decomposing your music, the world would thank you.”

“So, Mark. What’s your prediction?”

[Twain turns to audience, reaches under the TV desk and puts the head of the Alabama Crimson Tide elephant on his head. The face-painted, sign-carrying crowd erupts in cheers.]

“Mark, this isn’t a football game.”

“Tell them that. Those suckers will watch anything!”

When I tried the Archon through a 4x12, it didn’t sound as “aggressive” to me as the MT15. It was more refined, and the cleans did sound a tad better to me.

Someone mentioned the spike the MT has, what exactly is it? I haven’t noticed it myself, maybe because I ran it in half power?

The one thing the MT has going for it is how portable it is compared to the Archon.

I think my mind may be made up though, as I listed the MT on Reverb last night.

If you live within 5 houses of me, you’ll notice that I play at home too. :D
Here’s an example of having the opportunity to open it up in my dining room. Trust me, it’s 120dbm+ in there...
That’s a mere 85 watts thru a 2x12 with master on 2.

Feels good, right?

My amps don’t get that loud because I don’t use as much gain.

But...WOULD. ;)

I like them both enough to own both. Not because they’re vastly different. The volume taper is smoother on the Archon at lower volumes as previously mentioned. Midrange is voiced a little different. MT15 mids, as you raise, are a more pointed narrower mid frequency. Archon mids have wider, almost shelf like sweep. More girth to the mid frequency. I could use and be happy with either amp. Currently gig the MT15 because it’s lighter and easier to transport. That could change at any moment though.

I have the Archon 25, 100, and the MT15. I prefer the cleans of the Archons to the MT15. To me, the dirty channel of the MT15 is more compressed, more modern, more thump.

My question is "how loud will you be playing in your home?"
