Hi! Can you confirm that this is real 1987 prs? or at least give your opinion? I m not sure beacouse of tunners position and hand written (diiferent font) serial number that others have (of that period). Also, the owner told me that he removed logo beacouse it was black furnir on headstock and he wanted to be same color as body, and changed 5way pot to 3 way switch. Thank you in advance for help! Ciao, Mate.

Hello there. I'm the proud owner of a 1987 PRS Custom 24. The serial number DOES NOT look like the one on my headstock and the tuners are not only not period correct, the High and Low E string ones are missing their caps too. What's up with that? And removing the PRS logo from the headstock? Though the Birds do match mine in shape. In my opinion, if the seller is asking a 'vintage' price, I wouldn't pay it. But that's me.

Other than the "issues" that you have mentioned, your guitar looks like the real deal. If you look inside the neck pickup cavity, you should see the hand written serial number (and possible a few other markings) that will help to confirm its authenticity.

Shared tuners look correct. Serial number range is correct. The only issue I can see, is the written serial number. All of the 80's "production" models I have ever owned, had an inked serial number. The exception would be the Signatures. All 80's Sigs that I have owned had the hand written serial numbers.

I dunno, man. I've never seen tuners mounted that crooked - among other details already mentioned.

Too many red flags for my taste - at any price.

What he said

For start it does not look like a fake PRS to me.
It looks like a real Custom 24.
My best guess is that it is a refinished Custom, but no one can really be sure of the year. The 5 way is identical to my '92 for example.
If the pickups are original they could be blank backs, but could also be HFS / Vintage Bass with the stickers removed...
The most alarming thing is the removal of any writting in the pickup cavity...

Weird. The lack of writing in the pickup cavities, the lack of logo on front of headstock, and the non-traditional serial number all point to a re-finish, although why anyone would remove the writing in the pickup cavities is beyond me. The slightly crooked tuners could be stock, or could also point to a refinish. If it is a fake, someone put a lot of work into it, including the finish being different under the pickup rings (looks like this finish may have darkened over the years?).

Yeah, real PRS but refinished. Could be a great player or project guitar at the right price, but no collectible value.

If this is a 1987 PRS, where's the nickel plate damage on the bridge? And the pickups rings look too clean to me. Dude, I'm not buying into it. Just my opinion.

I really like PRS custom 24 and i like color and look of this one. Id love to have one. But this is obviusly a very good replica ( would luthier put tunners like that, i doubt) or refin. ( who would do that in this way-serial,pickup cavity, logo etc.). Guitar is in neighboring country so i cant check it out, the owner seems like a nice guy and believes that it is original...
