First off, let me be clear that I'm not a music thief. I don't pirate peoples music. My policy on this has always been, if someone gives me a download of MP3s to check out a band, and I really like it, I buy it. If I don't, I delete it. I figure that way at least I gave them a shot to know for sure, but if I like them, I buy the CDs and rip my own MP3s.

In fact, I found Circus Maximus on an internet radio station. Went and found a download for all of their (at the time, 3) albums. When I played through each one time, I immediately bought them all and ripped my own MP3s. So a couple weeks ago, a client bright a USB stick into my office with some music for me to check out.

So, like any real Van Halen fan, I've always sort of not been a huge fan of Gary Cherone after III. He wrote most of that music and A) it wasn't Van Halen (except for Fire In The Hole) and B) I was not overly impressed with it. Plus, the Extreme that got all the radio play was Cold Hearted, More Than Words and Get The Funk Out. I have nothing against any of those songs, but didn't hear anything in them that made me think "Guitar hero."

A couple months ago, Nuno and Gary were on Live at Daryl's House and they were really cool and Nuno definitely had some skills. So, when she offered me some Extreme, I figured I'd give it a try.

NOW I know why 11 Top is always going on about Nuno. He can REALLY rip, and while he doesn't necessarily play like Van Halen, he does remind of of Eddie in how he can easily flow between precision and speed and serious vibe. She gave me 3 albums worth of MP3s, and by the time I'd gone through them all once, I know really know why people think he's such a great guitar players. HE IS! Totally! He can be ripping precisely one second and flow right into some looser vibey stuff and right back to speed, and do it all with great feel.

So yes, I'm late to the party, but boy, Nuno is a GREAT guitar player!!! And yes, I'll be buying some of their music soon.

And this is where Steve gets to say "Told you so (moron)!" And thanks for saying that last part under your breath. :D

Yeah, I always thought Get The Funk Out had a really cool groove. NB is a serious player. Decadence Dance was another rocker.

Yeah, I really liked that song, but when Nuno was being mentioned with the shredding elite at the time, I hadn't heard anything to convince me. Now I have! And, he has way more vibe and feel than most of those guys, so yeah, he's one bad dude! Side note, on Daryl's he kinda looked stoned most of the time. Not that there's anything wrong with that. LOL

Also, if you missed the Alcatrazz album that Vai played on (Disturbing the Peace), do yourself a favor and grab it.

The only song by Extreme that i could pick out of a crowd is, "More Than Words." I still hear it from time to time. It was almost a staple for the wedding gigs I DJ'd, snd I got tired of hearing it. Now its stuck on replay because of this thread.

While I've never been a general shred fan myself, I have been a Nuno fan since first hearing him. Pornograffiti and III Sides to Every Story are both great freaking albums, and I still have quite a few songs from both in my regular listening rotation.

I mentioned that one and two others that were really mostly what I was familiar with. Trust me, if that’s all you’ve heard, you haven’t heard Nuno!

Edit: And Hole Hearted was the other one that got a lot of radio play, that doesn't really show off Nuno.

When I saw the Generation Axe tour at the Ryman, Nuno definitely held his own-MAJOR chops and vibe!

Doooood. Nuno has such groove and feel, that's what separates him from the other shredders coming out of that era. I was/am way more into Extreme than their contemporaries.

Extreme's Waiting for the Punchline album is a clinic in raw, unadulterated guitar badassery. It doesn't hurt that Mike Mangini is drumming on this album.

    "Hip Today"

    The super-locked-in "Cynical"

He also did a cool grungy solo album called Schizophonic.
It's like Nirvana if Kurt could shred.

Finally, I think why VHIII sucks is because Gary wasn't being Gary. It's like he tried to change his style to fit and it just didn't work. I remember being so damned disappointed when that album came out since he is an incredible singer with Extreme.
