My first and favorite PRS is my ‘09 Standard Satin 24 Trem.

This Standard Satin 22 Stoptail came up for sale and I could not say no. It had a set of pickups that I swapped out for this set recommended by another member here.

The swap was an instant upgrade. I can talk about them in another post.

One day I was working on a project in E flat. I noticed a shift in resonance with the guitar that wasn’t there when tuned in E standard. The pickups even seemed to come alive. I decided to try heavier strings in lower tunings and was pleasantly surprised. I forget exactly how low was ‘too low’ but it was likely drop A or something close

The best way I can describe this guitar is “meaty”. My experience in low tunings is somewhat limited but I am very happy with this setup and will keep it this way for the foreseeable future. It most certainly “chugs” in case you’re wondering. Also, backing off the volume and giving that extra output with 8-10 is definitely the way for me with this one.

I am no luthier but can get my way around a setup with relative ease. Getting this guitar dialed in was pretty easy. I was able to get the action even lower with the heavier strings without much buzz.

When the guitar was in E standard with 10’s I thought it may need a new set of locking studs. The bridge had of a bit of lean forward causing some sitar effect and I’ve had success with locking studs in the past. After the string swap the issue was gone. I’m sure there’s an explanation but I certainly cannot formulate that one into cohesive words haha

I’m not great at describing certain things I feel in a guitar but it’s almost like this thing desperately wants to stay tuned low. No back cavity or springs with the extra wood in the back and the bridge mounted right to the body is a recipe for success IMO.

These are all of the ramblings I have on this guitar for now. I’d love to hear your thoughts on any of this.

Here are some pics of the guitar if you’d like to check it out;

Awesome looking guitar! The Standard Satin series of guitars are MORE than special.;)
Over the years I’ve learned the same thing and you’re 100% correct. Some guitars just suit lower tunings better than others.
The opposite is also true. One of my Singlecuts is so dark that I leave it in E Standard or Drop D. That one doesn’t play nice with lower tunings.:)

I have a similar “issue” with my ‘04 McRosie. Whether it’s the rosewood neck or some other factor it also likes to stay in E Standard. E flat Standard is great as well. It’s worth noting I replaced the wooly sounding McCarty pickups with a set of covered 57/08’s, some of my favorite pickups

This thread should’ve gotten more love. I’ve got a McCarty standard with \m/ pickups in drop C. The guitar is a monster. I had an SC satin standard that I should’ve held on to.

I have a standard satin 22 stoptail from that era too with a Tremonti in the bridge and an uncovered dragon 2 in the neck. They are fire breathing dragons!!
