Definitely the amp plays a big part. I don't hear my HFS' as harsh at all. I use Boogie Mark amps and they sound amazing with those amps.

At this point, I've been through every pickup made (almost) from 1982 through 2004. The pickup I swear by now is the HFS (or 85/15). If they don't have them already, I put them in all my PRSsss.
