I'd also have to agree with this. My cousin had an old Gibson Heritage Les Paul that had really no sustain, regardless of what was being played anywhere on the neck. We tried a variety of different pickups and none of them were an improvement.
I've had this 1997 McCarty since 2005 and owned it longer than any other guitar. I struggled with the sound for a long time, but it has Wolfetone Marshallheads with alnico 4 magnets in it now and sounds grrrreeeaaat. This guitar has gigged all over the upper midwest with me.
Took me a while to learn this and you may already know. When you put the new screw in, put a small drop of fingernail polish over a location where it goes into the saddle, after setting the intonation. The nail polish will hold it in place but be weak enough to break free if adjustments are...
I'd try Deoxit on the switch and retension the contacts by bending them so they have more pressure on each other. Good luck with the project and have fun!
I've only had core PRS guitars, but some of the pots I've measured were around 500K, but many were a bit lower. One push-pull pot measured 390K, which is pretty low. I'd just get a 500K and start from there.
If it were me, I'd do Yellow Tiger or Tobacco Sunburst. YT is modern, but still kinda classic/classy. You can also never go wrong with Tobacco Sunburst.
