Take some time and find a used Thorn Jr90.
There have been two that sold recently in or close to your price range.
I love my PRSi as well.
IMHO the Jr90 is significantly better.
I haven't played the Collings.
Be a little carefull.
Most young dogs that can be described as quiet, low key and like to lay around a lot can also be described as profoundly stupid.
Earlier posters got it right...make a couple of visits to a dog pound and play with some of the dogs. You'll find a few that want to adopt...

--Will the new studs in the older bushings, say from 1999, form tighter stud/bushing contact similar to the new models?

I feel bad for them. PRS is a 1st rate production guitar company with a first rate product. It still benefits from from the input of the artisan luthier who inspired the company. I have to believe they're going to do great...
I've watched this train wreck and stayed out of it. Should probably stay out of it now....but speaking plainly.......I find it unbelievable that anyone who works with wood professionally, let alone professional woodworkers making guitars for a number of decades, doesn't know of or hasn't heard...
