Thank you so much to everyone for all the helpful information. Based on everyone's input and some reflection and experimenting, I really think it's a combination of factors that were negatively impacting my view of the guitar's tone:

Oh boy, I just did the same thing. To both sides! Then while trying to reattach the first screw the spring flew across the room and I may never find it again! I'm not sure I will be able to attach it, if I do. It's very difficult to do this with just two hands, holding everything together...
A couple other questions about the guitar:
- Why does it have a bridge that has no adjustable saddles? Is the guitar just so well made that saddles don't need to be adjusted to get it to intonate? What if I change string gauge?
- Has the McCarty 594 made this guitar obsolete or less valuable...
