I have three with redwood tops. They sound great. Unfortunately, I'm no good at describing the sound. As a consolation here's a video of a guy playing a Tonare with the redwood top. There is an Angelus still at Lark Guitars in Texas.

By fiddling with the wattage knob, the guitar volume knob and a little with the gain knobs, you should be able to find your tone at a low(er) volume. My 25th is un-modded and through a 2x12 open or closed back cab I can get it reasonable.

The tool is a pneumatic die grinder. I'm guessing it's used for polishing frets (although they have many varied uses from cutting to grinding to polishing).
I took a better look and the chuck on it changes my guess to a drill rather than a grinder.
If they'd do it, I'd have a set of gold plated Starla pups put in the SCJ and maybe a piezo system. If not, I'd send in the Custom and have the dings touched up which is something I've been wanting to do for a while but never seem to get around to.
