Taming the distortion on Archon 50

Glad you found the Custom 50! I had one, and loved it, did a mix of classic rock and 90s alternative. One thing I liked was putting an OCD pedal in front of the lead channel to tighten it up. Also changed the 6L6s to EL34s. Great tone, very versatile.

    Very cool stuff, Les! :)

Lesteban Hates Amp Modelers. A Rant.

All (especially Les!), sorry I fired off so hard back to the original post... I had just been hit with a bit of irony in that the exact same sentiments have been thrown at PRS, not only with their electric guitars, but their acoustic guitars, basses, and amps. I also find it ironic that Paul...

Lesteban Hates Amp Modelers. A Rant.

Les, I do understand, you make a living at recording and playing and I certainly don't, BUT.... Really!?! This kind of rant is one of the reasons I'm not very active here. It's a F-ING tool, for gawds sake, if you don't like it, don't use it. You've tried them and hate them? GREAT...

Multi-guitar band, cant hear self, turn down or up?

One thing I didn't see mentioned... try a GOOD compressor between your guitar and amp. You will get a fuller sound without needing to turn the volume up. Try the Wampler Ego compressor or any compressor that has a 'blend' knob to get the original attack back into the signal.

    Controlling Gig Volume

Something I was told a while back was 'let the PA do the work'. That has resonated with me. No matter what the size of the venue, I mic my cab, and run the guitar though the PA and monitors. I then keep the volume down on the amp, but use a compressor to drive the signal into the amp. I get...

They ain't making it easy, PS Custom 24 with 85-15 pups

If it's a retro Custom 24, would 85 be the year 1985? Isn't that Chainsaws and Deep Dish pickups?

    2 channel custom 50 loop?

I have a 2 channel custom 50. I use the ISP Decimator II G to control the noise. It is the first pedal in the loop, then TC pedals after that.

When You DON'T Reach For Your PRS, What Do You Reach For?

I've been playing a Les Paul that was built for special run for Guitar Center as my main gigging guitar lately. It's basically the Jimmy Page guitar without Page's signature. I don't know why I've bonded with it like I have, even though I have 3 amazing Private Stocks, and a crazy SCT IRW.

    Switching to EL 34

For me, the Custom 50 with the 6L6s felt 'tight', and that the EL34s seemed to loosen the amp up a bit. The clubs that I play, I can't really open the amp up too much. I usually run the gain on the lead channel at about 1 to 2 o'clock, have an Ego Compressor in front of the amp, and I just...

    I want to start recording...

Both sound good, but definitely different tone,. :) A couple of things I've found when working with recorded guitar... less gain (as opposed to Les gain :) ) is your friend. A super saturated tone that sounds great when playing alone typically gets buried when you mix a full band in. Second...

    Switching to EL 34

I did it with my Custom 50. All I had to do was change the bias a bit, was fairly easy, just needed a voltmeter and some patience. I went with the Ruby tubes, no issues so far.

Ever consider selling several PRS to buy a single Private Stock?

There is a lot of truth to that... 3 PSes. 2 were 'used'... And all are awesome...
