why didn't anybody tell me?

There’s a 2002 McCarty with 57/08’s and a ding on Reverb for $1500. You should buy that today.

Yeaah!! The awesome 57/08´s. Maybe one of the best Pups ever created by PRS! 1500 Bucks is still a fair price for a Core Line guitar(depends on the condition as well).
Maybe you should try to find and contact the seller directly. It can save some money as well, cause Reverb charges as well.

This is an 03:

Mee too..:) But the 03 needs some intense cleaning on the fretboard. Still, both great guitars. Here in Europe they might cost 40% more.

So is a McCarty just a CU22 with a hardtail?

My wife just shot those down. :(
She prefers this one:

Uh... it’s a little more than that. Thicker body, thinner headstock and a different headstock angle depending on what year Custom you’d be looking at.

My wife shot down a similar McCarty too... I listened to her and... I don’t wanna say I regret it but... I still want a McCarty. WTF does she know about guitars anyway? :p

Yeah, I heard you there.
My wife has a funny way of influencing (directly or indirectly) all of my guitar purchases.
it's easier to get her to agree if she agrees with the looks of the guitar.

I own an MT Mc Carty and a S2 SC 250. Love them both, but unfortunately not equally..Go for the one of the Mc Cartys, you won´t regret that painfull choice!

Did she consult you on the color choice for the painting?

So this is the actual guitar...wish the pix were better, but DANG!

Get this one and ask for forgiveness later...

You could go for a used CE or 'new' 2016 CE Standard (if still around), but might still want to upgrade the trem of those.
Plus you'd keep lusting for this one anyways...

In essence, this PRS will last longer than you. So take the price and divide by your remaining life expectancy. The yearly or better yet monthly cost is so low, my wife usually shuts up (or pauses really long) after that calculation.

yes, very nice ones. condition always looks better in pics, so investigate well.
This one or the 594 you started with. Personally I don't like a three way switch on a doublecut horn.
I like the single tailpiece better. Nice that one of these has birds, but i bet the 594 birds are nicer, and you said ebony right? determine how much you like/dislike or are indifferent to birds.

I saw your paint job - that needs at LEAST two more coats! Save up and get what you want! And while I really shouldn't be handing out marital advice, if she's gonna set the budget she shouldn't get to veto stuff WITHIN the budget! My wife has zero input on my guitar stuff. If I'm buying cheap stuff I don't even mention it. If I'm buying expensive stuff, I let her know and tell her what I'm selling or giving up to pay for it. But she's got no say unless she's got a financial concern. But I've never spent more than we could afford so that hasn't come up. I guess we each have to make our own deals in that regard.

I'm a very longtime Fender guy too (more strat than tele, but both at times) and I just recently bought my first PRS. A used 594, from Guitar Center. I think the one you played was even one of the ones I was looking at. This was back in February, so if I'm right it's been there a while - there were a few whale blues available. I'd played a number of PRSs before and liked plenty of them, but wasn't really moved by any of them enough to part with the requisite $$$. But somehow word got out to my corner of the guitariverse and EVERYthing I'd read and heard about and from the 594 suggested this was a holy grail guitar of sorts. I don't think I ever heard a negative thing about it other than "too expensive". I wanted to play one but wasn't able to find one anywhere close by. So once I'd come up with the funds, I ordered the best one I could find at the best price from GC, knowing if I didn't love it, I could very easily return it locally and just be out the $20 or so for shipping. That way I could really give it a proper workout and get to know it and not just play self-consciously for 20 minutes in a loud store. I identified 3 or 4 that looked like they were in the best shape, a finish I liked, and reasonably priced (amazing how much variation you can find with used GC prices for the same model!) and called the stores to ask specific questions about them. And I pulled the trigger. And it took me about 30 seconds of playing it to know I loved it and another minute or two to know it was absolutely a keeper.

I've played a few other PRSs since and I've liked some of them a good deal. But not like the 594. The bottom line is I think PRS has been getting better and better at this guitar making stuff and they're the best they've ever been right now. Whether they can continue to innovate and improve and this is just a nice point on the upslope or whether we'll look back on these days as a kind of peak we'll only know in time. I'm not much of a player - i'm not even remotely worthy of this guitar. I will never pull anything like it's best out of it or find any limits it might have. But I'm just good enough to appreciate it and enjoy it every time I play it. Sometimes I think it's more guitar than I really should have and I'll think "maybe I should sell it and get something a little more appropriate to my ability level". But I've played a few when I've had that thought and there's no way. This is a dream guitar - it's largely a GAS killer, there's absolutely no way I'll ever want for anything better in this category of guitar. And it'll probably save me money in the long run. That happened to me with my bicycling obsession several years back - I finally spent way too much on a custom road frame and it saved me a fortune in the long run because I never bought another road frame after that. Sometimes you gotta spend money to make money (or to save money) or something like that!

I still have a strat because, as much as I love the 594 and as good as it's coil split is, there's NOTHING that sounds or feels like a strat. And I LOVE my strat. In some ways it's closer to my heart than the 594 because it's almost like family to me after 40 years of playing them. But the 594 is such a perfect instrument going back and forth between the two is like meat on a stick - freaking HEAVEN! I don't have a hollow or a P-90 guitar and don't want another guitar currently - I recently tried a really cheap used PRS soapbar and it was awesome but it just confused matters too much when I went to grab something. Someday I may decide to add one or both (maybe combine them with a tele thinline with P-90s or a Casino or a ES-339 with P-90s. Or maybe not. But I can't imagine ever regretting spending the $$ on the 594. I'll probably pass it on to one of my daughters or their husbands or something if anyone plays guitars by then.

So, you know, do what you need to do to keep house and home together, but if there's any way you can manage to stretch, it's kind of like stretching on your first mortgage - it' probably worth doing!

Ditto, but I say yes to almost anything.........

If you are refering on PRS-Guitars, there is nothing bad about that. After playing over 20 years on different gear, I´ve found out for myself that PRS-Guitars have something addictive and very special about them .
I consider them somehow as little works of art . Therefore I am very curious about every single one. Pretty strange:rolleyes:

Take a deep breath, exhale slowly, ...........

... now go out and try as many PRSi as you can, S2s, Core, new, used. You already know the level of nirvana that comes along with a USA made core McCarty, .........
