Memorable Lyrics

'Cause when life looks like Easy Street, there is danger at your door.-One of my favorite Robert Hunter lines.

While I love the whole song, this line has stuck with me for many, many years and everytime things start rolling a little too easy, I start looking over my shoulder...

Animals As Leaders made some of the finest lyrics throughout their work, in my opinion.

With a tongue like a cow she could make you go wow. Zappa
&
Upside of Lonely, Tom Hambridge.
Foghat version- Upside of Lonely

The good thing about you being gone
I can watch the game all day long,
I can stretch my legs out in the bed
Extra pillows ‘neath my head
Don't why nobody told me about the upside of lonely

I got a lot more room for my stuff
And I only have to wash one cup
I can stay up late and play my guitar
And the groceries go twice as far
Don't why nobody told me about the upside of lonely

Your girlfriends ain't ringing the phone off the wall
And I never have to hear from the mother in law
I ain't cut the grass since the middle of june
I smoke a big cigar right up in my living room
Don't why nobody told me about the upside of lonely

I drop my dirty clothes on the floor
I let the trash pile up by the door
I eat pizza three times a day
I ain't worried ‘bout watching my weight
Don't why nobody told me about the upside of lonely

I was watching AXS last night and they had the Peter Frampton Raw accoustic show and he played a song I'd not heard before, Not Forgotten. While Peter dedicated the song to his old friend David Bowie, the lyrics really resonated with me as I've lost some special people too over the last couple of years.

Not Forgotten
Peter Framton/Gordon Kennedy

What do you do
When you learn
There's no tomorrow?
Hold hands, sing songs,
Live life till you're gone,
But not forgotten.

What do you do
When you're sad
And heavy laden?
You reach deep and beyond.
Give love till you're gone,
But not forgotten.

And those who went before,
Why are they remembered?
They held our hands.
And sang us songs.
Lived their lives,
Till they were gone.
But not forgotten.
Not forgotten.

Find your light
turn it on
shine it down on everyone

I really love some of the Cleaver lines from the Old Delta/Pre War Blues Era Like
In Robert Johnson's From Four until Late "A woman is like a dresser a Man is always ramblin through her drawers keeping many a man to be wearing apron overalls"

Also the following written by Robert Hunter and Jerry Garcia about Janis Joplin.

All I know is something like a bird within her sang (note 1)
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on
Tell me all that you know
I'll show you
Snow and rain

If you hear that same sweet song again, will you know why?
Anyone who sings a tune so sweet is passing by
Laugh in the sunshine
Sing, cry in the dark
Fly through the night

Don't cry now
Don't you cry
Don't you cry any more
La da da da

Sleep in the stars
Don't you cry
Dry your eyes on the wind
La da da da da da

All I know is something like a bird within her sang
All I know she sang a little while and then flew on
Tell me all that you know
I'll show you
Snow and rain

(1) Robert Hunter originally wrote the song as a tribute for Janis Joplin. Phil Lesh now sings "All I know is something like a bird within him sang", transfering it Jerry Garcia instead

A regular for the Dead, this was also performed by Jerry Garcia with John Kahn, and more recently by Bob Weir with Ratdog and by Phil Lesh & Friends.

Isn't that a great show? That tour is the only time I've seen Frampton. And yeah, that song is fabulous.

Yes it was!
I'm jealous, I've never seen Peter live. He's appearing close to me this summer, but only as the opener for Steve Miller. I saw Miller years ago and have no need to see him again, but I'd love to see Peter live. So I'm still trying to decide if it's worth the admission price to leave after Peter's set or wait until he comes back around as the headliner. Neither of us is getting any younger though...

Have you seen the NPR tiny desk concert with Frampton and Gordon? You can tell he's having a blast just entertaining people and playing guitar. And don't even get me started on that Frampton's Camel D-42...drool worthy!

Been pining over a girl, so "Again" by Archive has been a frequent spin

"You used to lift me up, now you bring me down..."
and
"I used to lift you up, now I bring you down..."

It's one of my favourite lyrical devices -- to switch persons to add that extra 'umph'. I even made a mixtape once that had three different titles, "What I was Listening to When You Broke Up with Me"/"What I was Listening To When I Broke Up With You"/"What I was Listening To When We Broke Up"

Ahh princess on a steeple and all the pretty people
They're all drinking, thinking that they've got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts
But you better take your diamond ring, you better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him he calls you, you can't refuse
When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you've got no secrets to conceal

How does it feel, ah how does it feel?
To be on your own, with no direction home
Like a complete unknown, like a rolling stone...

I bring this one up yet again, as i make the decision to let go, for my mother. There is no harder moment than this for me, right here, right now.

Feeling you shake
Feel your heart break
Thinking if only, if only, if only, if only
And the salt water runs
Through your veins and your bones
Telling you no not this way, not this way, not this way
And you would give anything
Give up everything
Offer your life blood away
For yesterday
No one leaves you
When you live in their heart and mind
And no one dies
They just move to the other side
When we're gone
Watch the world simply carry on
We live on laughing and in no pain
We'll stay and be happy
With those who have loved us today
Finding the answer
It's a human obsession
But you might as well talk to the stones and the trees and the sea
'Cause nobody knows
And so few can see
There's only beauty and caring and truth beyond darkness
No one leaves you
When you live in their heart and mind
And no one dies
They just move to the other side
When we're gone
Watch the world simply carry on
We live on laughing and in no pain
We'll stay and be happy
With those who have loved us today
And we won't understand your grief
Because time is illusion
As this watery world spins around
This timeless sun
Will dry your eyes
And calm your mind
No one leaves you
When you live in their heart and mind
And no one dies
They just move to the other side
When we're gone
Watch the world simply carry on
It's okay, we will stay and be happy
Stay and be happy
With those who have loved us today

I may be away for awhile. Lingering but not responding.

Gonna throw a curve ball here but one of the most memorable lyrics that stuck with me is the one that I misheard as a kid and it stuck with me permanently.

The Right Lyric:
"Blinded by the light. Revved up like a deuce, another roamer in the night"

What I Heard (and still hear...):
"Blinded by the light. Wrapped up like a douche, another boner in the night"

Yeah, I'm one of THOSE guys lol

Yeah, one that sticks out in my head, was my kid brothers misinterpretation of BTOs Taking Care of Business...he probably still thinks it's "Taking Care of Biscuits"...dumb a$$.

My heart goes out to you, buddy. We’ll be here waiting for your return.

For What It's Worth
Buffalo Springfield
There's something happening here
What it is ain't exactly clear
There's a man with a gun over there
Telling me I got to beware

I think it's time we stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

There's battle lines being drawn
Nobody's right if everybody's wrong
Young people speaking their minds
Getting so much resistance from behind

It's time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

What a field-day for the heat
A thousand people in the street
Singing songs and carrying signs
Mostly say, hooray for our side

It's s time we stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down

Paranoia strikes deep
Into your life it will creep
It starts when you're always afraid
You step out of line, the man come and take you away

We better stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, hey, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, now, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
Stop, children, what's that sound
Everybody look what's going down
