Fretboard Woods

I've always wanted a Custom 24 with an ebony board..

I LOVE mine. 2008 Artist in Santana Yellow. All stock and sounds really clear and sweet. Best sounding CU24 I have ever heard, including some very early and PS examples.

No argument here. I'm just wondering how many rosewood fret boards have been ruined by overuse of fretboard oil. Too heavy or frequent application softens the wood between the fibers and can even turn it to mush. Untrimmed nails possibly but even with long nails you've really got to be digging in to ruin a hardwood fretboard. Heavy sweat maybe?

I’ve wondered the same thing. I’ve seen over-treated wood get soft enough that a fingernail can easily scrape a line into the wood.

If the fretboard is soft, guess what happens to the tone? It’s like having a rubber fretboard. Not a good plan.
