All you Vela Guys and Gals...

I don't own one but I played a used one at GC I wished I had brought home. Played like butter, and this one was super lightweight. Nice pickups. A true rock machine.

Not sure if these will help, but...

Does it sound like a Tele? No... but it's in the ballpark. My concern when these were first announced was the bridge. After some time with one, I say it works fabulous. No worries.
The only thing I'll add here is that on my all 'hog satin vela, the note 'attack' is a bit round & soft. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I don't know if the standard finish models do this also, and I suspect the new reclaimed wood versions are a good bit snappier from the videos I've seen.

Anyway, the Vela model has a nice, full "C" shaped neck, is extremely light weight, and is almost the most comfortable / ergonomic body shape I've ever played.

My impression so far with a reclaimed Vela has been a Tele or SG on steroids. I have a really lightweight, resonant K-Line Tele, and the Vela has a bit more output, with a bit more snap on the front end. The notes seem to feel bigger, if that makes sense. I really enjoy playing the Vela, as the neck is quite nice. Played around with the action a little, and it is fantastic guitar for slide playing now (heavy top strings 10-52).

Thanks!!! Sheds some light.

The Vela is a unique animal. The Starla pickup has real guts and a clarity of its top end that reminds me of the stacked single coil offerings of the 80s...both Tele and Strat...except with clarity and balance. Output is ample enough to push most amps' input and takes to dirt pedals and boost, where I've had great success. The Type-D pickup is a huge surprise! In a word...wow! If you love a great neck a Tele pickup, this will pique your interest. It's a little fuller and probably more output, but the total guitar equation makes it feel Tele-like. But this is not a Tele.

I have a tele, and a strat, and other non-PRS guitars.

But I honestly can't say I actively compare my RL SH Vela to any of those - it is just too awesome to say "it sounds like this other thing".

It has this "thing" about it that is just so "awesome". I dunno if it is the reclaimed wood, but it is the first guitar I have ever touched that felt like it had a soul, if you will. That is a bit over the top, but you get my drift.

In fear of sounding a bit 'off my rocker', that's very accurate, to me, too. The Vela showed its personality sooner than most of my other guitars, and is one of the reasons I don't sell them. It's like a friend that thinks and feels a certain way...differently than the others...and that influences the "conversations" we have.
