Sounds like there out of phase. So the swap the pos/neg from one of the pickups should cure that.

Get rid of the stock chrome buttons, sub in some faux Pearl or Ebony there half the weight if that is a concern.

Strange indeed, one last thing to try (doubtful but why not). On a humbucker guitar try lowering the pole screw on the G string and give that a test.
